Counter Intuitive

About a month ago we upgraded our internet service to the fastest connection available.

Since that time our internet connection has, well, sucked.

Today the company's technicians arrived to try to find the problem. After checking this and that and the other thing they could not find a reason for the slower connection.

Their advice?

Downgrade back to the second-best level.

Apparently the fastest connection is known to be problematic.

Huh?

By the way, upgrading is free (except for the increased monthly rate).

Downgrading costs 100 chf...

Wonder if it has something to do with bandwidth? Like that the fastest connection is fastest unless a bunch of people near you are also using it and then it gets slow?

Either way, that's quite aggravating. =( You'd think they'd waive the fee since it's their mess-up. Oh wait, that's right, it's Europe, Land of Crummy Customer Service. ; )

Europe is not a "land". Europe is a collection of a very large number of countries. Some of which loooove officialdom and some of which don't know the meaning of it. Some of which have great customer service, so long as you are flexible, some of which don't. Some of which have a population which never, ever complains to the company, but complains TO all their friends about the slightest thing (UK, I'm looking at you) and hence manage to put some companies out of business... (NTL, that means you)...

PS - rather more on the point - we suddenly found our broadband was incredibly slow last January, as everyone had got MP3 players for Christmas and was downloading music, perhaps a combination of that and all those customers upgrading??

We've had our share of problems lately...

So another librarian type question I am dying to ask you.. Have you heard of a new rule in writing? It includes typing or writing with only one space at the end of a period or sentence onto the next one. If you google it apparently, you will find this.. Way to confuse the world with this new idea???? Apparently it's being taught in the 9th grade at Canadian schools...

Any thoughts?

I read aloud your post to J about the problematic internet connection and the downgrading costs - we both had to chuckle because it sounds so "swiss". As for the 2 spaces after a period; hey, I learned to type in 7th grade (a LONG time ago) so naturally I am a two-spacer. Old habits die hard. Or don't die at all.

Whatever it is, it is not bandwidth. It's strange, though.

I have always been a one-spacer. In school we were taught that either was correct. I thought the one-space made better sense.

Except when I didn't have quite enough to fill a 5-page paper. Then I used every trick possible to fill the space!

That's terrible that they charged you to downgrade. What a Swiss thing to do. Glad we didn't upgrade. Sounds like it's just another money-making scheme.

I had a Swiss telecom company try to charge me for equipment that I didn't order and they didn't ship. After 4 months of promises that it would be refunded on my "next bill" they started charging me late fees and threatening to disconnect my service. The confederacy has an Obudsman for dealing with these things and as soon as I told said company that I had completed the forms and was headed to Bern for an appointment woth the Ombudsman... wow! All of the fraudulent charges were removed. http://www.ombudscom.ch/
