I sent this link to quite a few Americans this morning as well ;)
I mentioned something like this to a friend recently. She came back reminding me that we also have many more options other than taking a car here. I then also told her of how driving any sort of long distances here (outside CH) means you have to pay tolls as well, which turn out to be almost the cost of gas all over again. That did it.
