I've read about this before, and I don't think it's a joke. Fortunately, our King has been an indoor cat for the past 17.5 years, so I don't think he has much to worry about. Plus, seeing how much the beast sheds, I don't think his pelt would be in much demand for a coat anyway.
I read that yesterday and have to admit I was flabbergasted (it never occurred to me that it might be a joke). I'm no cat lover (except for TBF & Mrs. TBF's King, of course), but I would have to draw the line at allowing them to be hunted. And after seeing one of our local field cats catch a pigeon, I figure they do the Swiss a public service...
another vote for not a joke, this has been in the french swiss and french papers for a bit (our cats are inside only!). of course in our apartment building someone put up a sign saying that you should keep your cats inside because it is the research scientists who are stealing them to do experiments on, i had to laugh...

I was afraid it was real. The New York Times is not known for their joking.

Sara -- was it an ironical laugh? Or an evil, mad scientist laugh?
I've seen it on the Swiss and French news several times during the fall and winter... unfortunately, not a joke. :(
